ISC Megalodon Rebreather

Innerspace Systems Corporation
Megalodon Rebreather

The Megalodon Rebreather is a compact, electronics-driven fully closed circuit constant PO2 design rebreather (eCCR) manufactured in the U.S. by Innerspace Systems Corporation. The Megalodon is noted for it's highly modular and exceptionally durable construction. ISC resources ensure start to finish manufacturing consistency, making them an ISO 9001:2000 Registered Company.

The ISC Megalodon rebreather is available in several configurations for supply cylinders and buoyancy control system. For buoyancy control the Megalodon can utilize the Dive Rite systems, or any backplate, harness and wing. Less cylinders, the entire unit can be carry-on luggage for most airlines.

Megalodon Product Features

Breathing Loop
The axial flow scrubber canister design contains a water trap, provides simple and quick replacement of the CO2 absorbent and allows easy access to the three oxygen sensors and battery housings. The dual over-the-shoulder counterlungs are independently shoulder/front-mounted and position adjustable to provide the most effective breathing configuration for your body. Each counterlung contains a water trap and is fitted with a swivel valve for manual addition of your gases and the valve accepts standard BC-type quick release hose fittings. The exhalation counterlung includes a OPV with spin-valve, providing for the easy the removal of any trapped water, even while underwater. The low-maintenance mouthpiece, called the Dive/Surface Valve (DSV), is compact and uses a friction seal so there are no o-rings to wear out and replace. The DSV is designed for easy one-handed open/close operation. Also included is the Auto Diluent Valve (ADV) which automatically adds diluent into the breathing loop during descent as the gas in the loop compresses.

APECS™ 2.7 Electronics Package
The Advanced Personal Environmental Controller System (APECS™) has a simple self intuitive menu system and essential information dive screen that minimizes the task loading of the diver. The electronic CCR control system utilizes a electrically isolated and independently powered controller and display handset. The only shared components are the three oxygen sensors which are accessed individually by the handsets, thus requiring independent oxygen calibration on each handset.

  • Primary - The controller is responsible for maintaining the chosen PO2 set-point by firing the oxygen injection solenoid using voting logic with the three oxygen sensors. The primary handset display, normally worn on the wrist, shows the three individual oxygen sensor values plus the average PO2, ambient and breathing loop temperatures.
  • Heads-Up-Display (HUD) - The HUD displays the actual loop PO2 for each of three sensors via a code of flashing red/green LED lights. The LED's also have a user adjustable dim/bright setting.
  • Bilinear calibration - The two-point calibration system provides an exceptionally accurate high and low point PO2 information. Calibration can be performed with air and any known gas of 70% or greater oxygen content, and calibration can also be performed at high altitude. Individual sensor MV readings are also displayed on the handsets.
  • Power Management - APECS uses the very power efficient Jaksa automatic oxygen addition solenoid. The handsets back light settings are timed on, always on, and off. There is a display power save option, to turn off displays after 10 minutes of inactivity. With these options the diver has great flexibility in managing power consumption and handset readability. The handsets also display the battery voltage, both for no-load and load (i.e. when the solenoid fires), as well as battery low indicators.
  • Set points - The diver has the following set points that may be selected during the dive, or preselected prior to diving: Manual (0.2), 0.4, 0.7, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and Auto Set Point (ASP).
  • Adaptive O2 Injection Algorithm - The O2 injection algorithm which controls the solenoid firing may be adjusted by the diver to select personal preferences to provide very smooth setpoint maintenance.
  • These features are just the highlights, for more details consult the APECS Operation Manual .

Pursuit Electronics Package
The Pursuit electronics package from Shearwater Research provides an electrically isolated and independently powered secondary PO2 display handset. The Pursuit is completely OEM integrated with the Megalodon rebreather and provides full real time decompression dive computer capabilities, including required stop obligations and time-to-surface calculation. Features of the new Pursuit CCR dive computer include:

  • Loop PO2 Monitoring w/CNS Tracking
  • Air, Nitrox, Trimix and Heliox gas support
  • User Defined Gradient Factors Conservatism
  • Easy to Read and Simple to Use
  • Adaptive Menus with Large Display
  • Automatic Setpoint Switching
  • Ascent Rate Display
  • Battery Voltage Display w/Battery Low Warning
  • Metric (Meters) and Imperial (Feet) Units
  • Flip Screen with Automatic Backlight
  • These features are just the highlights, for more details consult the Shearwater Manual .

Regulator's and SPG's
The Megalodon rebreather uses the highly reliable and easily serviceable APEKS first stage regulators. The regulators each have an Over Pressure Valve installed in a low pressure port. Each regulator has a compact 1.5-inch submersible pressure gauge (SPG) and the Oxygen SPG has a color coded green boot. The oxygen regulator supplies a manual addition valve and the oxygen injection solenoid. The diluent regulator supplies a manual addition valve, ADV, and BC inflator hose. All hoses, gauges, fittings and valves are US industry standard although SPG's are optionally available in BAR.

Cylinder Options
The Megalodon design allows the diver to choose between a large variety of gas supply cylinders using standard left and right modular DIN valves. Divers of varying statures will appreciate this flexibility as they can customize their Meg to fit their body type as well as adjust the weight of the unit by selecting cylinders that are lighter or heavier. We suggest aluminum 19 cubic foot capacity cylinders, which minimizes the rebreather total weight. Drysuit divers might consider steel 23 cubic foot cylinders if they need to provide additional weight. With the volume of the larger cylinders, diluent capacity is sufficient to support on-board bailout for the sport diver, and provides plenty of oxygen capacity even with transfer under filling.

Harness and Air cell Options
The Megalodon rebreather provides standard 11-inch centers mounting which accepts any standard backplate and wing buoyancy control system. Many divers prefer the ISC travel backplate and continous webbing harness with Tetradon Wing. The Tetradon wing provides better horizontal trim by adding more lift at the bottom end of the CCR and is rated at 50 pounds (22.67 kg) lift. The wing does not interfere with access to the cylinder valves and also provides a side mount anchor point for side mount systems.

Consumables
The recommended consumables are: Megalodon 7.5V Alkaline Battery Pack, Molecular Products Sofnolime 8-12 mesh (1-2.5 mm granules) CO2 absorbent, DuPont RelyOn MDC (formerly Virkon) 1% solution for breathing loop disinfection, Lubrication-Technology Christo-Lube MCG-111 oxygen compatible lubricant for O-ring seals, and Caig Labs DeoxIT GOLD for cleaning gold electrical contacts.

Training
The Megalodon rebreather requires formal training for safe use. The pricing does not include training, and training is solely the responsibility of the purchaser. Training is available worldwide from ISC approved instructors. The training time is five to seven days consisting of a classroom lecture, confined water session and at least seven OW dives. Fill Express also offers Megalodon instruction at our International Training Center in SE Florida.

When you purchase your Megalodon rebreather, we suggest you immediately complete the required Liability Release and mail it to Innerspace Systems Corporation. If you are not already certified for the Meg, at the current time as per ISC requirements we are only able to ship the unit to your instructor.

An eCCR Alternative: The COPIS Megalodon mCCR

The Constant Oxygen Pressure Injection System (COPIS II) Megalodon is a closed-circuit manually operated rebreather (mCCR). The COPIS-Meg design includes a special constant-pressure first stage that continuously streams oxygen in to the breathing loop at slightly less than the divers oxygen consumption rate. The diver is responsible for monitoring the breathing loop via oxygen sensors and occasionally operating the manual addition valves to maintain the desired PO2 setpoint. The lower cost COPIS-Meg is popular with CCR divers that prefer electronic simplicity but also want the quality and capabilities of the Meg eCCR.
